Man shot by officers at Gas Works Park dies

SEATTLE — A man who police say was advancing toward officers with a broken bottle at Gas Works Park has died after being shot by two officers.

Seattle police Officer Nick Metz said officers were patrolling the park about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday when they were flagged down by a park security officer who said he’d been attacked by a man who was drinking and had a campfire going in the park.

Metz said five or six officers approached the man, who was drinking from a large bottle.

While they were talking to the man, he broke the bottle and advanced on officers.  One officer fired a Taser at the man but it had no effect.  Metz said a second officer fired a Taser at the man, and it had no effect, either.

As the man armed with the broken bottle advanced on a third officer, two officers fired multiple shots at the man.

The third officer, who had been backing away from the man, fell down.  The suspect fell on top of him. The officer was not injured.

The man, who was shot in the arm and chest,  was transported to Harborview Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.  Police say he was in his 40s.

Metz said the information given was preliminary and could change.

The shooting comes after a large party at the park Monday night left behind graffiti that will cost $8,000 to clean up.
