On Meridian Avenue North in Tulalip, the scene for most of the evening was sub-freezing cold in near total darkness.

Steve Hansen lives in the area and said the power went out Sunday afternoon. He had a few words to describe the conditions Monday: “Dark... I'm glad to see they're (utility crews) out here getting it fixed now. It's supposed to be in the 20s tonight I heard.”

By 8 p.m., the temperature in Tulalip had dropped to 28 degrees, and Hansen was buying propane to heat his home. "It's cold. People are running generators, propane bottles," Hansen said
"Two days … it's a lot of cold," said Alex Canto, who also lives on Meridian Avenue North. Canto abandoned his dark house in favor of a hotel.

In Seattle, cold temperatures pushed people to walk at a brisk pace to fight the freeze and the city had its emergency shelter ready.

Some embraced the elements like Andy Beal who was zipping around Burien on a skateboard in the late afternoon as temperatures sagged. “You've got to take advantage of this sun when I can get it,. I feel that way at least.” Beal was cruising the streets, in nothing more than a t-shirt, all at a balmy 36 degrees,. “I think the cold will only get you if you let it,” he said.

Utility crews in Tulalip did get some of the lights back on, giving people like Hansen a break from the bitter cold,. “I'll be glad when the lights are all back on,” Hansen said.
