Report: JBLM soldier killed in Afghanistan

News outlets in Minnesota reported Monday that a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier was killed in Afghanistan on Sunday, but so far no official word has come from the base or the Department of Defense, KIRO 7 news partner The News Tribune reported.

Army Sgt. Nicholas Dickhut, 23, was killed during a firefight, his mother told Minnesota Public Radio.

From The Tribune:

(Dickhut's mother) told the radio station that Dickhut was a forward observer from the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment. His death is the second fatal casualty from that battalion on its yearlong deployment. The battalion deployed in December.

It belongs to Lewis-McChord's 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division but it is reporting to another brigade from the 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg during this deployment.
