WSU and UW schedule earliest kickoff for Apple Cup yet

Fans at Apple Cup in Seattle WSU Cougs and UW Huskies are cheering on their teams at the 2026 Apple Cup in Seattle.

PULLMAN, Wash. — Next year, Washington’s cross-state rivalry will take place earlier than ever.

The Washington State Cougars will host the University of Washington Huskies at Gesa Field on August 28, 2027.

The game was originally scheduled for September 18 in Pullman before both schools agreed to move the game to the season-opening week.

This will be the second consecutive year that the Huskies will kick off their football season with a game against the Cougs.

The game caps the first week of classes for WSU and also provides an early-season bye week before conference play.

The Huskies defeated the Cougs this year with a final score of 24–10 in Seattle.

The annual football game between the University of Washington and Washington State University began in 1900.

Did you know, it wasn’t actually named the “Apple Cup” until 1963? From 1931 to 1962, the Huskies and the Cougs played for the Governor’s Trophy.

In 1963, the Washington Apple Commission donated the Apple Cup trophy to the winner of the annual game, a nod to Washington being the largest apple producer in the country—and the name was born.

To date, UW has won 75 Apple Cup matchups, lost 33 to WSU and the rivalry has ended in six ties.
