KENMORE, Wash. — Charges have been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office after a female suspect allegedly stole and altered checks totaling over $40,000 from mailboxes in Kenmore and Bothell, said the Kenmore Police Department (KPD).

A KPD detective identified the suspect following an investigation.

The check thefts occurred in late August from residential mailboxes across both communities. According to police, the suspect altered the stolen checks and successfully cashed them for thousands of dollars.

Investigators identified the woman through a series of search warrants.

KPD says the suspect has an extensive criminal record, including 17 prior felony convictions and eight gross misdemeanor convictions. Among those prior convictions, 11 were for identity theft or forgery.

Police encourage residents to exercise caution when using private mailboxes, whether locked or unlocked. They also advise against placing checks in private mailboxes as a form of payment.
