DUPONT, Wash. — Washington State Patrol (WSP) troopers said a woman crashed her SUV on I-5 in DuPont Monday morning — then got out and attacked the two girls who were riding with her.
Her SUV hit a semitruck and rolled near Center Drive.
Police said all three got out, and that’s when the 35-year-old from Steilacoom attacked the girls with a knife.
“It’s shocking,” Washington State Patrol Sgt. John Dattilo told KIRO Newsradio. “It’s tragic. It’s terrifying.”
Dattilo said two Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) soldiers passing by saw what happened and got the knife away from her.
“If that hadn’t happened, we don’t know what the outcome would be, but we can assume the worst,” he said.
The girls are 9 and 15 years old.
The younger girl has broken bones and a stab wound, but both are in stable condition.
The driver of the semitruck was not hurt.
The woman was taken to the hospital to be checked out and was expected to be booked for suspected DUI and assault.
