With upcoming warm weather, first responders warn of cold water danger

WESTERN WASHINGTON — With warm weather in the forecast for Friday and Saturday, first responders are warning people of the dangers of cold water.

Temperatures are expected to be in the upper 70s and low 80s across Western Washington for the hottest weather of the year so far.

The warmth will have lots of people heading to lakes, rivers and Puget Sound, but Captain Ryan Hendricks, Swiftwater Lead for Eastside Fire & Rescue, has a warning.

“I can tell you as rescuers, even with our protection, that water’s still cold,” said Hendricks.

Hendricks said he worries most about this time of year when air temperature suddenly warms as the snowmelt is just beginning.

River temperatures are in the 30s and 40s.

“I want people to know the water is still running very cold and very fast,” said Hendricks.

Lakes will only be in the 40s to low 50s, presenting a danger of cold water shock.

Hendricks was in several local rivers this week, training rescuers.

The Seattle Fire Department warns people to wear life jackets because cold water can cause people to be unable to move their muscles and get back to shore.

Recent budget cuts could possibly mean a lack of lifeguards at most beaches, too.
