WIAA: Start of fall sports will be delayed

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association announced that fall sports for the upcoming school year will be delayed.

Football will start Sept. 5, and all other sports will start Sept. 7.

“The board will continue to work with staff, member schools and state agencies to monitor the impact of COVID-19,” officials said.

A committee of board members, staff and WIAA stakeholders will work to create a fall schedule with the adjusted start dates.

Last month, the WIAA released guidance for opening up high school athletics and activities.

All in-person extracurricular athletics and activities were canceled through the end of the school year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The WIAA consists of nearly 800 member high schools and middle/junior high schools, both public and private, and is divided into nine geographic service districts.
