WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — The Whatcom Humane Society is caring for another 30 dogs after the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office found the group Monday while responding to an animal cruelty call.

Pittie Project PNW, a non-profit dog rescue shelter, was housing the dogs in the 200 block of Russet Avenue in unincorporated Whatcom County when the Sheriff’s Office said it received a tip about the animals living in poor conditions.

According to the office, when deputies visited injuries and conditions visually observed by investigators included, but were not limited to:

• Open wounds on dogs’ bodies, legs, and tails

• Evidence of worms in feces

• Matted and discolored fur consistent with prolonged exposure to feces and urine

• Significantly underweight, with ribs, hips, and leg bones visible

• Strong foul odors throughout the living areas where the dogs were housed.

Deputies said the dogs also appeared to lack adequate food and water.

Investigators also learned that various volunteers had previously removed 13 additional dogs from the property after discovering the animals’ condition. Information gathered during the investigation indicated that Ashley Georgia had received donated dog food and thousands of dollars in financial contributions intended to support the animals’ care.

According to the office, the owner of Pittle Project has cooperated fully with the investigation.

After the dogs were removed from the property, Whatcom Humane Society announced in a Facebook post that the shelter would be closed to the public Wednesday after it adjusted to the influx of new animals.
