More strong wind, heavy rain expected this weekend

SEATTLE — A vigorous weather system will move through on Saturday with more heavy rain and gusty winds.

Winds could top 35mph on Saturday around Puget Sound and even a little stronger at the coast and north, so while no watches or advisories are out, we could have some impacts from wind during the daylight hours Saturday (the strongest wind timeframe will be between 11 a.m.-3 p.m.) with the wind settling down by Saturday evening.

The good news is that a lot of leaves are now off the trees and that process is continuing. That could limit tree damage if we do get high winds. On the flip side, the ground is soggy so trees with inadequate root systems could topple in stronger gusts.

In the mountains, periods of snow will occur with a few inches of snow at Stevens Pass and a rain/snow mix or snow at Snoqualmie Pass (especially toward dark) with a trace to a couple inches possible.

On Sunday, expect more rain at times, though it won’t be as windy. Mountain pass snow will continue to be likely at times with another 1-4 inches possible. Highs will be chilly in the lowlands, around 50.

NEXT WEEK

Monday: This could actually be a fairly quiet day with some clouds and sunshine. But a few showers could be around.

Tuesday: Rain is likely to return, and it’ll probably be pretty windy too. Right now, it doesn’t look like we’ll have a major wind event, though we’ll be watching the forecast models closely over the next few days in case a low pressure center develops and gets close to Western Washington.

Mid-week and beyond: Unfortunately, while it looked like we could get some drying, the forecast models are now pointing at continued soggy weather with rain at times. The risk of landslides due to excessive rainfall will continue to increase.
