‘Moderate’ air quality to continue with smoke, slowly improving into Tuesday morning

SEATTLE — The air quality has slowly been improving on Monday, but is still at moderate to unhealthy levels for sensitive groups across much of western Washington, and even worse near the Bolt Creek Fire and east.

Through Monday night, expect an onshore flow off the Pacific Ocean that will slowly increase and will continue the slow process of getting air quality to improve a bit more by Tuesday morning. However, it is still likely to be in the moderate category, in most places around Puget Sound. We also have some smoke aloft from California producing some haze across the region. That will slowly improve as well.

Highs tomorrow with some limited afternoon sunshine will be in the 60s to low 70s. We could have some thunderstorms in the north Cascades late in the day, so we’ll be watching that.

There’s little change in the forecast except we ought to have better air quality west of the Cascades Wednesday through Friday and probably a bit more sun. Seattle highs will be in the low 70s.

Of note will be the steadily-decreasing morning lows from the mid and upper 50s for Seattle Tuesday morning to perhaps some 40s to low 50s by the weekend. We’re losing more than three minutes of daylight each day and thus our nighttime cooling period is getting three minutes longer each day. Now that the heat is done (likely for the summer), overnight lows will start getting a bit more chilly!

Over the weekend, expect more clouds and even the prospect for some light rain showers at times — emphasis on “light” and “at times!”

Highs will be in the upper 60s for Seattle Saturday through early next week, which is a little cooler than average.

The outlook for Saturday afternoon’s Husky game is for mostly cloudy skies, a chance for a few light showers around (around when?) and temperatures throughout the game in the 60s.
