Expect scattered showers and mostly cloudy skies around western Washington today.
High temperatures will be in the low to mid 50s. Several rain showers are swinging around a low-pressure wave that is tracking past the South Sound. Another low-pressure system in British Columbia is spinning rain showers through the northern Sound. These are the areas which will be the rainiest on Tuesday.
Winter travel in the passes begins tonight
Overnight, a cold storm will arrive and hover offshore and overhead through Saturday. This large upper low is sliding down from Canada and will crash western Washington with cooler air to bring mountain snow and lowland heavy showers and thunderstorms with small hail, gusty winds, and downpours. Wednesday will be a stormy day at times as temperatures fall into the upper 40s to low 50s.
A winter weather advisory is in place for the Cascades beginning at 5 p.m. today.
The east slopes of the Cascades, including the Methow Valley, will receive 4-8 inches of snow. For the western side of the Cascades, snow levels will drop to 4,000 feet with 4-6 inches of snow above that elevation. Wednesday night into Thursday, the snow level will drop to 3,000 feet for a few inches of snow that includes Snoqualmie Pass, our lowest mountain pass. The highest amounts of snowfall are expected above 4,500, where up to a foot should accumulate, especially on Mt. Rainier.
Looking ahead to Halloween weekend
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday will have chilly morning low temperatures in the mid to upper 30s. Each day will have showers and sunbreaks, with isolated thunderstorms possible again on Friday. The large upper low pressure will finally track away from our area for a start of moderating temperatures and drier weather on Sunday afternoon.
