We’re stuck in a stretch of weather that’s about as quiet as it gets, but the stagnant air is starting to become more noticeable. Fog, low clouds, and haze will be with us again this morning, with some of that haze pushing air quality into the moderate range, especially in the South Sound.
The reason the fog and low clouds keep hanging around is an inversion, with warmer air sitting above cooler air near the ground. That acts like a lid, trapping the low clouds and some pollution underneath it. Eventually, the sun will break through and do the work of burning off the fog, but it may take until late morning or early afternoon.
This pattern sticks around through Wednesday and Thursday, so expect more cool mornings with fog and low clouds before some afternoon sunshine.
The bigger change comes Friday as a trough of low pressure moves into the Northwest. That will bring scattered showers Friday and into much of Saturday. Rainfall looks fairly light and uneven, but cooler air will move in with the system.
Through Thursday, highs will generally be in the mid-60s to near 70 around Seattle. Then temperatures drop into the lower 60s for the weekend.
So, the story this week is really a quiet, stagnant pattern that hangs on for a few more days — before cooler, showery weather finally arrives Friday.
