We need to expect a ‘Mount St. Helens-like eruption’ of COVID cases, King County health officer says

During a Friday afternoon briefing about COVID-19 trends and vaccine rollout, the health officer for Public Health — Seattle & King County made a startling statement.

“We need to expect the coronavirus equivalent of a Mount St. Helens-like eruption at some time in the next few months,” Dr. Jeff Duchin said.

That’s due to a new variant of the virus that will eventually reach Washington.

“The variant of concern will likely be found locally any day now,” Duchin said.

He said the new variant will require more rigorous prevention measures to control.

“This virus has been working out. It’s gotten faster and more fit,” he said.

Duchin suggested wearing a well-made mask with two layers or more that fits snugly.

“The new variant is going to make a lot of problems. It’s going to make the outbreak harder to control.”
