Washington commission apologizes after racist remarks disrupt PSE rate hearing

The Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission apologized after a virtual public comment hearing on Puget Sound Energy rates was repeatedly interrupted by racist and offensive remarks.

The hearing was held Wednesday, Oct. 7. In a statement released the following day, the commission said a “bad actor” repeatedly interrupted the hearing and acknowledged its moderation fell short.

“We missed the mark with our moderation and pledge to do better in future events,” the commission said.

The commission apologized to people who were subjected to hate speech during the hearing, as well as the hundreds of participants who took time to provide comments and those who may have been discouraged from commenting.

Public comments on the PSE rate case remain open through Nov. 12.
