WASHINGTON — In a letter to congressional leaders, Washington State Attorney General Nick Brown called for protections against “unchecked AI development”.
According to a press release from the AG’s office, Brown sent the letter with a coalition of 25 other attorneys general.
“Lawmakers must act to protect the public’s interest and ensure safe AI development. Inaction will lead to potentially existential risks,” Brown said. “Our state is working to establish greater protections and accountability under our laws. But we need bipartisan leadership from Congress to prevent the technology from ever evading human control and infringing on our rights.”
The statement said the attorneys general are asking Congress for federal oversight on safety testing and standards for models, a standard incident response, and both federal and international agreements to enforce those standards.
The letter comes after leaders in AI development, including OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, have called for federal regulation of AI models, citing the potential dangers of an unrestricted future model.
Joining Brown in sending the letter to Congress are the attorneys general of Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, Wisconsin, the District of Columbia, and American Samoa.
