SEATTLE — Election experts are warning against a voting website funded by America PAC, a political action committee backed by billionaire Elon Musk.
Vote Safe claims to help with voter registration and election reminders, but Washington Secretary of State Steve Hobbs says there are potential red flags.
“The disclosure reads the information about voting and registering to vote on this website is sourced from third parties and may not necessarily be accurate,” said Secretary Hobbs. “Don’t go on this website. Why would you give your information to Elon Musk?”
In a post for Election Law Blog, UCLA Professor Rick Hasen claims Vote Safe collects the following information:
- First, middle, and last name
- Date of birth
- Full home address
- Email address
- Cell phone number
- IP address and location (This information is used to derive each user’s city, zip code, approximate longitude and latitude, time zone, and internet provider.)
- Browser, operating system, screen size, and language of your device
- What website referred you to votesafe.org
- Every link you click
- Every page you look at
- Your voter registration status (This is derived from a voter file held by America PAC or its vendors — not the state’s actual records.)
- Your district and ballot (This is derived from Ballotpedia.)
Vote Safe’s privacy policy says information collected on its site can be shared with “business partners” and “third parties.”
As of this writing, America PAC has not responded to KIRO 7’s request for comment.
