A vacant, boarded-up home in Tacoma was heavily damaged in an early-morning fire Friday, according to Tacoma Fire.

Crews were called to a home along East 32nd Street just after midnight for reports of a house fire. Firefighters arrived to find the structure fully engulfed in flames.

Because of the intensity of the fire, crews initially used a defensive strategy, battling the flames from outside and above until it was safe to enter the building. Once conditions improved, firefighters moved inside and shifted to offensive firefighting operations.

Nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution. Tacoma Fire said no injuries were reported.

One neighboring home suffered damage to its siding, but no other significant damage to surrounding properties was reported.

Firefighters remained at the scene through the night extinguishing hot spots. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
