Tacoma police investigating 16 cases of arson

TACOMA, Wash. — Tacoma police detectives are investigating multiple cases of arson that happened between Tuesday night and Wednesday night.

Tuesday’s fires happened at:

  • 7:48 p.m. in the 600 block of South Trafton Street
  • 8:10 p.m. in the 2000 block of South Eighth
  • 8:27 p.m. in the 600 block of South State
  • 11:05 p.m. in the 5100 block of North Pearl

Wednesday’s fires happened at:

  • 1:24 a.m. in the 4700 block of North Orchard
  • 2:06 a.m. in the 4600 block of North Gove
  • 3:08 a.m. in the 3700 block of North Cheyenne
  • 3:56 a.m. in the 3700 block of North Cheyenne

Four more cases of arson were discovered when employees came to work in the 4000 block of 6th Avenue, the 1500 block of South Union Avenue and the 3200 block of South D Street. Two separate scenes were identified at one location. Only minor damage was reported.

Three of the fires damaged a detached garage, an apartment building and a home that were within a mile of one another.

Information about the other fires is not yet known.

No injuries were reported.

Tacoma police officer Wendy Haddow said a vehicle was set on fire and the flames spread to a carport in the 1000 block of South Mildred Street.

Two additional fires were also reported on Thursday:

  • 7000 block of South 56th Street
  • 500 block of South 78th Street

A car was set on fire, and a shopping cart at a Safeway was set on fire.

Haddow said these fires were considered arson, but did not know if they were connected to the earlier fires.
