Tacoma garage shooting suspect charged with murder, blows kiss to courtroom gallery

TACOMA, Wash. — Three suspects appeared in court Wednesday in the deadly shooting of a 16-year-old boy in Tacoma early Sunday.

It happened in a parking garage on Commerce Street, where a group of people had gathered. Court documents say as many as five masked gunmen started shooting and the teen was killed.

18-year-old Jose Campos was charged with first degree murder, nine counts of assault, and firearms charges.

Campos is accused of firing into a crowd that had gathered in the Commerce Street parking garage. 16-year-old Josiah Midgyett was killed during that shooting.

“Your honor, I’m going to ask the court to enter pleas of not guilty to all counts on Mr. Campos’ behalf,” defense attorney Jeff Kim said.

Jose’s brother, 20-year-old Davion Campos, as well as his wife, 19-year-old Alina Guillen, were also charged with murder and assault. Not guilty pleas were entered on their behalf.

Before bail was set, the victim’s mother pleaded to the judge for the three suspects not to be let out on bail.

“I would just like no bail. Yes, ma’am,” Midgyett’s mother said.

The prosecution noted both men are convicted felons, and that Jose Campos had been shot in the hand 24 hours before the parking garage shooting.

Prosecuting attorney Lisa Wagner noted the bandage Jose Campos was wearing in court to the judge.

“As you can see from the arm, this defendant was the one who was shot the night before, which leads detectives to believe that this was a retaliatory shooting,” Wagner claimed. “He’s certainly shown on [surveillance] video being one of the ones armed and with a mask.”

In the end, the prosecution asked for, and was granted, $5 million bail for each of the Campos brothers, and $1.5 million bail for Guillen.

Jose Campos blew a kiss to the gallery as he left the courtroom.

Witnesses told police up to five masked gunmen opened fire in that parking garage. Tacoma Police declined to say whether they’re searching for more suspects.
