Strong winds bring down trees, power lines across Western Washington

A strong and wet system brought down trees and power lines across western Washington on Sunday morning.

Here’s an overview of the damage:

King County:

In North Seattle and Shoreline, the strong winds led to a power outage that affected more than 4,800 customers early Sunday. Officials with Seattle City Light said a tree branch fell onto power lines causing the outage around 8 a.m. Just before 9 a.m., power was restored to the area.

In Renton, paramedics and firefighters helped remove a man who was trapped after a tree fell onto an apartment complex. The tree fell around 8 a.m. near Shadow Lake. The man was freed around 9 a.m. and was taken to Harborview Medical Center where he remains in satisfactory condition.

On Mercer Island, power lines went down in the 4500 block of West Mercer Way around 8 a.m. Police closed the road to traffic and contacted Puget Sound Energy.

In Bellevue, officials restricted traffic in the 9500 block of Lake Washington Boulevard after a tree fell on power lines around 9:30 a.m. Crews with Puget Sound Energy came to help make repairs and drivers were advised to avoid the area.

In Issaquah, downed trees and power lines blocked Mountain Park Boulevard Southwest at Mt Fury Circle Southwest and Mt. Defiance Circle Southwest at Mountain Park Boulevard Southwest.

South Sound:

In Tacoma, a light pole went down on I-5 northbound near Port of Tacoma Road around 7 a.m. The debris was cleared around 10 a.m.

In Lakewood, trees and power lines went down around 8 a.m. at Gravelly Lake Drive and Nyanza Road. “We advise to stay away from the area until it’s cleaned up,” Lakewood police said in a tweet.

Power lines also went down around 8 a.m. in the 5100 block of North Pearl Street in Ruston. Officers with the Tacoma Police Department and the Ruston Police Department responded and blocked the section of the street. The street reopened around 3:15 p.m.

Standing water on the roads led to a crash around 9 a.m. at the intersection of Canyon Road East and 176th Street in Frederickson. “Please give yourself extra time this morning,” fire officials said.

Puyallup police closed Wildwood Park in Puyallup around 9:45 a.m. due to downed trees and power lines. Officials did not provide an ETA for when it would reopen.

North Sound:

Around 8 a.m., a car lost control and went off the road on I-5 near Stanwood. Troopers said rain was coming down hard and there was standing water on the roads at the time of the crash. The driver was not injured.

Mason County:

The strong weather caused trees to fall across Mason County in areas like Harstine Island and Belfair. There were also power outages in some areas.
