Strong wind downs trees, power lines around Puget Sound

Strong wind and heavy rain around the Puget Sound Friday has downed trees, power lines and caused outages in multiple areas.

>>Rain, wind and snow in forecast

At about 5:53 p.m. Paine Field had a wind gust of 59 mph, meteorologist Morgan Palmer said. He also said that it was very windy in Snohomish County north starting at 7 p.m., and the Seattle area could get gusts in the 40 to 50 mph range starting at 10 p.m.

Just before 6 p.m., Jefferson County PUD reported outages for nearly 2,400 customers in areas like Chimacum.

Over in Snohomish County, Edmonds Community College closed its campus about 5:20 p.m. due to a power outage.

And Washington State Patrol Heather Axtman said trees had fallen on State Route 9 near Lake Ki. “It might be a long night dealing with this.”

Over in Kitsap County, crews with North Kitsap Fire and Rescue said they responded to 10 weather-related calls within four hours. That started at about 1 p.m. Most of the calls involved downed trees and wires.

Fire officials said they received a call about 4:20 p.m. that a tree fell on a car as it drove along Gamble Bay Road near Resource Ridge. The car was damaged but no injuries were reported.

Up in the North Sound, the Snohomish deputies said downed power lines shut down 236th Street Northeast between 32nd Avenue and 27 Avenue Northeast.

As the wind picked up in places, outages kept coming in from places like Herron Island, Lakebay area, Grays Harbor County and other areas.

The high wind has also caused the officials to close State Route 104/Hood Canal Bridge. There’s no estimated time for it to reopen.

The bridge has been taking a beating from the wind and the tide. Waves were seen crashing onto the bridge, which is 30 feet in the air.
