Storm threat decreases by tomorrow morning

A threat for mountain lightning and much cooler weather continues for the rest of the day. The area of low pressure we have been tracking for several days is weakening and moving across northwest Washington right now.

The threat of strong storms and lightning remains in the forecast; however, any action (should it develop) will likely be isolated and mainly confined to the Cascades and areas along/near the Canadian border for the rest of the day.

We did have some fast-moving storms in parts of western Washington this morning with occasional lightning. The storms moved south to north through Pierce, King, Snohomish, Skagit, and Whatcom counties. As expected, there was not much rain with the isolated storms, and the areas where lightning was recorded will be monitored for potential fire starts.

From tonight and through the first part of Sunday, the threat for storms will continue, but it shouldn’t be widespread. Windy weather and high fire danger continue east of the Cascades this weekend.

Looking ahead to tomorrow and the coming week, we will track a high-pressure system moving back over western Washington late Sunday. This will give us a nice run of weather through Tuesday. Temperatures will average in the upper 70s, with lows in the 50s on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. Computer models predict a day above 80 degrees for the Seattle area on Tuesday before we cool back to the lower 70s by the end of the week.

Rain chances remain low from Monday through Friday. Another area of low pressure in the upper atmosphere will move in on Wednesday and may scare up a shower on Thursday, but it doesn’t look like a significant chance of rain.

Keep an eye out for a few showers or storms – mainly over the mountains - this evening through tomorrow morning.

Otherwise, it’s a nice-looking end to the weekend on Sunday.
