State of Emergency declared for Mount Vernon, city recommends some evacuations

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. — Due to the anticipation of major flooding, the Mayor of Mount Vernon declared an emergency for the city on Monday.

The city later recommended evacuations for residents of west Mount Vernon as a flood is threatening areas west of the Division Street Bridge.

The division street bridge closes when the Skagit River reaches 35 feet. Based on current information, the bridge is likely to close at 9 p.m.

In a statement, Mayor Boudreau said a flood wall was deployed in downtown Mount Vernon.

The Skagit Riverwalk and Plaza, Edgewater Park and Lions Park are all closed.

The mayor suggested residents take action over the next 24 to 48 hours to protect their homes, families, and property from floodwaters.

If the river reaches 35 feet at the Riverside Gauge, the city anticipates closing the Highway 538 bridge.

Sandbags and other resources can be requested from the Skagit County Department of Emergency Management at 360-416-1850.

Sandbags are also available at Dike District 17, 121 Stewart Road or the Mount Vernon Yard Waste facility at 409 West Fir.

The mayor also warns residents that are curious about the river to stay clear of city crews who are tending to the flood wall.

Updates can also be found at skagitcounty.net/flood and the River Level Hotline at 360-416-1404.

A Red Cross shelter will be open at 6 p.m. at Bethany Covenant Church, 1318 18th Street.
