Sprinkler system helps contain apartment fire in downtown Seattle

SEATTLE — No injuries were reported after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in downtown Seattle early Tuesday morning.

Seattle Fire Department (SFD) crews were dispatched around 2:45 a.m. to the complex along 2nd Avenue South, near Pioneer Square.

When firefighters arrived, they could see smoke coming from one of the units. Crews found the fire inside a seventh-floor apartment unit.

SFD said residents did an excellent job of evacuating the building safely and quickly. The building’s sprinkler system was also effective at getting the fire under control and keeping it contained to the unit where it started.

A significant amount of water was left in the fire-damaged unit and two units below it because of the sprinkler system.

SFD said residents of the fire unit and the apartment directly below it will likely be displaced. So far, the department has not heard of any requests for assistance from the Red Cross.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
