A Seattle Police Department Officer and a man were injured Friday morning when a domestic violence incident near Seattle’s Jose Rizal Park ended in shots exchanged between police and a woman who had barricaded herself inside an apartment.
In a press conference Friday afternoon and a statement released shortly afterward, SPD and SPD Interim Chief Sayles said police responded to calls about a domestic violence incident around 8 am.
When police arrived on the 900 block of Golf Drive South, they found a man with a laceration on his face. After the man was sent to the hospital, the department says officers attempted to enter the apartment of the woman involved in the altercation, but she had barricaded herself inside.
After obtaining a warrant, the department says officers entered the apartment and “at some point” an officer shot the suspect, injuring her.
According to Susan Gregg, Spokesperson for Harborview Medical Center, a woman was admitted in critical condition from a shot around the same time.
According to SPD, that same officer was injured by the suspect before she was taken into custody. SPD says the officer was not shot.
“I’m scared to live here. I’m on a project-based voucher so I cannot move anywhere. Living here is probably the most terrifying experience I have ever encountered in my life.”Blake Allen, who lives on the third floor of the building where the shooting occurred, said.
Allen has lived in the building for two years and says it felt safe until a shooting in October last year. She worries about the people struggling with addiction, saying there have been times they have lunged at her and her son. She’s grateful Councilmember Eddie Lin got more security guards for the area, but she wants more of a police presence.
“Mayor Katie Wilson, I beg you to please talk to other people and fix this area for us. Cuz no area should be like this; Seattle should be safe.” Allen said.
A safety plan released by the Mayor this week called for more patrols and bike patrols in the city, but the Beacon Hill Neighborhood was not one of them.
The department says King County’s Independent Force Investigation Team will look into the incident.
“We can’t go into any much more detail. We’re going to let that play out, make sure we get a thorough investigation in regard to that.” Sayles said.
