Snohomish County teen investigated for threat against Muslim families

NORTH CREEK, Wash. — The Snohomish County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a student at North Creek High School near Bothell posted a threat on Instagram.

A district spokeswoman said Monday that the district determined there is no credible threat. However, the sheriff's office said Monday their investigation is ongoing.

According to the sheriff's office, the 15-year-old made a threat against Muslim families. The district heard about the post and contacted the school's resource officer, sheriff's deputies and the student's family.

"As we move through our procedures, we are now able to determine that there is no credible threat," Northshore School District Communication Director Lisa Youngblood Hall said. "We are working with all parties involved, including our Muslim community to move forward in healing, relationship-building and educating."

The post was taken down and is still under investigation by detectives. No arrests have been made, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The Northshore School District sent a letter home to families about the incident on April 24 describing the post as “hateful and offensive” and saying the district took immediate action.

In the letter to families Northshore Schools Superintendent Michelle, Reid, Ed. D wrote:

“I am saddened to have to repeat this: hate speech and actions will not be tolerated in the Northshore School District. There is simply no place for it, and if it occurs, we will respond accordingly. With the world in such turmoil, we want to be a place where every member of our community feels safe, respected and welcome. We value each of our students, our families, our staff, and community members. I want to send my deepest regrets to our Muslim families as this incident does not represent our values and beliefs as a school district.”
