MONTESANO, Wash. — Six orphaned baby opossums were released back into the wild following several months of rehabilitation, said the Montesano Police Department (MPD).
MPD Officer O’Connor joined representatives from the Twin Harbors Wildlife Center for the release on October 3.
MPD says the rescue effort began several months ago when a mother opossum was struck and killed by a vehicle while her babies were still attached to her. Six of the offspring survived the collision.
Officer O’Connor contacted Twin Harbors Wildlife Center, which took the opossums and provided care.
Twin Harbors Wildlife Center says that caring for orphaned and injured opossums is a frequent task for the center. The facility also rehabilitates a variety of other wildlife species, including squirrels and birds.
They note that opossums play a role in local ecosystems by helping to control insect populations and other pests, including rats and mice.
Twin Harbors Wildlife Center is a nonprofit organization based in Montesano.
