Second Asian giant hornet nest of 2021 found

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — The second Asian giant hornet nest of 2021 has been found in northern Whatcom County, according to the Washington State Department of Agriculture.

The nest was located southwest of the first nest found earlier this year. There are plans underway to get rid of the nest.

A WSDA Facebook post stated Friday morning, “Eradication plans are underway and will take place in the next few days.”

Officials plan to provide an update when they have more information.

This new nest makes it the third found in Whatcom County within the past two years.

On Wednesday, agriculture officials reported that there were two new confirmed sightings near where the other nests had been eradicated. A hornet was tagged and released so it could be tracked to a possible nest.

Officials did not say if that tracking led them to the current nest, which was reported Friday.

Scientists also said on Thursday they performed their first bottle trap catch of the year.
