PINEHURST, Wash. — The new Pinehurst Station is now open to the public, but construction work is far from finished in the surrounding neighborhood as Seattle continues investing in projects designed to improve access and safety for people traveling to and from the station.
While station construction may appear complete from the front entrance, road work remains visible throughout the area as multiple projects move forward simultaneously.
Bright orange traffic barrels, construction equipment, and active work zones are still common sights in the neighborhood. According to Sound Transit, 90% of daily riders are expected to walk, bike, or take the bus to reach the new station.
That expectation is driving several improvement projects throughout Pinehurst.
“These include sidewalks, walkways, safer connections, protected bike lanes, neighborhood greenways for folks not only to get to the station but to walk around in the Pinehurst neighborhood,” said Mariam Ali, deputy press secretary for the Seattle Department of Transportation.
While the improvements are intended to benefit the neighborhood long term, some residents say the ongoing construction has been difficult.
“We’ve been disrupted by construction for several years,” neighbor Beth Daranciang said.
Daranciang said she is happy the station has finally opened, but said construction-related frustrations remain.
One of the major projects still underway is the NE 130th and 125th Mobility and Safety Project.
Ali said the project includes several transportation improvements designed to support growing travel demand around the station.
“We are putting our first arterial roundabout just to make traffic go easier,” Ali said. “We are making safer crossings for people to cross the streets to get to the station, bike lanes, and to help with the new Route 77 from King County Metro.”
As work continues, SDOT says it appreciates the public’s patience and encourages residents and drivers with concerns to use available resources, including the agency’s project webpage and the Find It, Fix It app.
Construction along Northeast 130th Street is scheduled to be completed by early next year.
