Seattle Student Union holds rally against gun violence at city hall

Several dozen students with the Seattle Student Union held a rally against gun violence outside Seattle City Hall on Wednesday afternoon.

In a news release, the union said it and students across the nation have “had enough” and that it is “done with the notion that our lawmakers in Olympia did everything they could” to prevent gun violence.

“Kids are terrified to go to school every day,” said Syd Walter, a senior in high school. “And as long as people are terrified to go to school, we are going to be talking about it. We are not going to be silent.”

The union is demanding that schools have at least one counselor for every 200 students to cater to students’ diverse backgrounds, and asks Gov. Jay Inslee to call a special session in Olympia to ban all semi-automatic weapons.

Last week, KIRO 7 reported on students at schools across western Washington holding walkouts to protest gun violence and school shootings in the wake of the Uvalde, Texas shooting that killed 19 elementary school students on May 24.
