SEATTLE — Seattle police have identified everyone involved in a September 6 shooting connected to an illegal street takeover that left one person dead and three others wounded near 3rd Avenue and Clay Street.
The Seattle Police Department (SPD) announced the update Wednesday. The shooting was one of three in Belltown over Labor Day Weekend.
A 20-year-old man died, and a 21-year-old man was left in critical condition. The 21-year-old remains hospitalized.
A 22-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman suffered gunshot wounds to their legs. Both got themselves to the hospital and have since been released.
“With the assistance of video footage provided by the SPD Real Time Crime Center (RTCC), neighboring business locations, and numerous community members, in addition to statements provided by those involved, SPD can give the following investigative update to the community, to clarify the circumstances surrounding the homicide,” according to a post on the SPD Blotter.
Argument preceded fight at Seattle street takeover
As cars and pedestrians gathered for the illegal street takeover, police say the 20-year-old man interacted with a 20-year-old woman. She was with the 22-year-old man and the 26-year-old woman who were later wounded.
“The interaction between the man and woman turned into a brief hostile argument before both sides separated,” the post said. “Witnesses stated that as this argument took place, they became aware that the 22-year-old man was armed with a handgun.”
Less than ten minutes later, police believe a fight started involving the 20-year-old man, the 21-year-old man and the 22-year-old man. Police say the 22-year-old “was armed with a legally possessed firearm.”
“Moments after the fight began, the 21-year-old man was shot repeatedly in the abdomen,” the post stated. “This man withdrew from the fight, sought assistance from bystanders, and ended up in the 300 block of Denny Way, where he was later contacted by first responders.”
Police describe how the fight continued
The fight between the 20-year-old man and the 22-year-old man continued. Police say the 26-year-old woman tried to break it up.
“During the fight disturbance, the firearm of the 22-year-old man fired numerous times, striking all three involved,” according to the post. “Eventually the firearm became separated from the fight disturbance and was picked up by the 20-year-old man, who walked away with the gun. The 22-year-old man and 26-year-old woman met back up with the 20-year-old woman before leaving the scene for HMC.”
Investigation headed for King County prosecutor review
The investigation remains ongoing. Police said it will be referred to the King County Prosecutor’s Office in the coming weeks for review and consideration of possible charges.
