SEATTLE, Wash. — Less than a month after moving on from manager Dan Wilson, the Mariners are actively on the hunt for their next manager.
ESPN and MLB.com report Tuesday that the Mariners are interested in speaking with the Houston Astros’ current manager, Joe Espada, and have received Houston’s permission to do so.
During his managerial career, Espada has a winning record, going 256-229 over the course his tenure with the Astros. Espada also served as the Astros’ bench coach for six years, including when the team won the World Series in 2022.
This year, the Astros finished 81-81. The team made the postseason but were swept in the Wild Card round by the White Sox.
After losing to the White Sox, Espada did make it known that he would immediately resign with the Astros, if they provided him with a new contract.
“As a bench coach, as a manager, I have witnessed so many great moments, so obviously I would like to continue enjoying those moments,” Espada said.
Espada has made it to the postseason twice in his three years as manager, but he has not won a series.
