SEATTLE, Wash. — A “major modernization” is coming to Seattle Center’s historic monorail station, according to a press release from the city on Friday.
The city says the upgrades will increase accessibility and improve safety.
In the statement, the city said changes to the station will include a layout in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, reconfigured ticketing and boarding areas, automatic passenger gates, and restoration of the station’s structures, including maintenance to guardrails and removal of historic materials like lead paint.
“As Seattle Center continues to welcome millions of people each year, this project ensures the Monorail station remains a safe, accessible, and welcoming entry point for our community,” said Randy Engstrom, Acting Director of the Seattle Center, in the press release.
“These improvements will help every visitor move through the campus comfortably, while preserving the history and character that make this place so meaningful. By modernizing a key piece of our infrastructure, we’re strengthening the cultural life of the region and preparing the campus for the growing activity ahead.”
Construction is set to start in September and will continue late into 2027, according to the city. The city said the project is fully funded through state and federal grants.
