Redmond the latest local city to try out electric scooters

REDMOND, Wash. — While other cities have tried out shared bicycles before adding scooters, Redmond is making its debut into shared modes of transportation on the street with electric scooters.

Lime will debut the scooters in Redmond Tuesday and is authorized to add bicycles in the future as part of a pilot program, according to the city.

Users download an app and unlock the scooter by scanning a code on the handlebars. It costs $1 to unlock the scooter and then 25 cents per minute.

Redmond joins Tacoma, Spokane, Everett and Bothell as Washington cities trying out the scooters.

The city said in a news release that the scooters will expand travel options for people, as the average trip in Redmond is 2.2 miles, or about a 15-minute bike or scooter ride.

City officials will evaluate how the program is going at the end of this year. The pilot period ends in May 2020.

Lime also offers a low-income rate. Anyone on a city, state or federal low-income program can sign up to pay 50 cents to unlock and 7 cents per minute. More information is available at li.me/community-impact.
