Raw deal: Two sushi restaurants burglarized 48 hours

KENT, Wash. — Two Sumo Sushi restaurant locations in Kirkland and Kent were burglarized within approximately 48 hours of each other.

Police are investigating both incidents to determine whether the crimes are linked.

Burglars stole iPads, work equipment, and cash from both restaurant locations.

Police said business management acted quickly in reporting both break-ins, and investigators are working to track down leads.

The first burglary took place around 5:30 a.m. Friday at the Sumo Sushi Grill location off Northeast 116th Street in Kirkland.

Security camera footage showed a thief, wearing a hoodie with his face covered, smashing the front door’s glass to gain entry, right before walking through the business.

Early Sunday morning, another break-in occurred at the Sumo Sushi location on Russell Road in Kent. In that instance, the burglar cut wires and disconnected cable lines, before taking items from inside the restaurant.

Maggie Barnett, a customer who arrived at the Kent location for lunch on Sunday, arrived to find damage at the front entrance.

“Glass everywhere, and it looks like somebody had definitely broken through and then tried to clear around it ”cause there was a human sized hole through the door,“ Barnett said. ”And then two employees were on the inside, we asked if we could still come in they said no umm and then they kind of quickly told us that somebody had broken in,” Barnett said.

Barnett noted the similarities between the two break-ins at the sushi locations.

“They reported the same stuff being stolen and it’s the same chain, so it’s definitely an interesting coincidence, for sure,” Barnett said.

Police in both cities are continuing to follow up on leads to determine if the break-ins are officially connected.
