Rain, strong winds kick off stormy stretch across Western Washington

The Highlights
  • Unsettled Weather Ahead
  • Windy and Rainy Today
  • Another Stronger Front Saturday Evening

A rainy and windy day is ahead on this first Friday of November. This is the beginning of a stormy pattern that is going to set up in the Pacific Northwest for at least another week or more.

This morning we will track rain spreading from the west coast and the northwestern part of the state across Puget Sound and the Cascades by this evening. This weather system will kick up a lot of wind on the coast and around the islands today. A wind advisory is posted, and coastal winds could easily gust over 30 to 40 mph. Residents of Island County and throughout the San Juan Islands, as well as coastal Snohomish, Skagit, and Whatcom Counties, should be ready for the winds to gust over 40 mph later today.

Rain could get heavy at times in the lowlands as this storm system moves through. Rain amounts today will likely be over .20” for the Seattle area. Wind gusts around Seattle could also top at 20 - 30 mph later this afternoon.

The snow level for the Cascades and Olympic Mountains will likely be well above 5000 feet, so the passes on Interstate 90 and State Route 2 will be wet but not snowy.

Temperatures today will not be too cold. Expect a high to range from 48° to 55° this afternoon.

The extended outlook calls for continued stormy weather for the next several days. Another stronger system will blow through here on Saturday night into Sunday.

The weekend cold front will pack a stronger punch on Saturday night with winds gusting over 40 mph, possibly as high as 50 mph on the coast and down the Strait of Juan de Fuca toward the islands. Snow level will stay high this weekend, and accumulating snow will likely happen well above 5,000 feet. For your forward planning, there will likely be several hours on Saturday morning and afternoon before the next system punches in.

More strong weather systems will likely move through on Wednesday and Friday next week. November weather is historically wet and windy, and this looks like exactly what we are going to see for the next several days.
