‘President Trump is simply wrong’: Washington attorney general responds to claims of voter fraud

SEATTLE — Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson released a statement Monday in response to claims about voter fraud President Trump made last week.

“President Trump is simply wrong about mail-in voting. Washington state conducts elections entirely by mail, and as Secretary of State Kim Wyman has made clear, Washington has never experienced ‘rampant’ voter fraud,” the statement read.

In a July 30 tweet, Trump claimed that mail-in voting will lead to “the most inaccurate and fraudulent election in U.S. history.”

Ferguson emphasized that Washington have never experienced rampant voter fraud and there is no data to support the president’s claim.

“If the president uses it as an excuse to try to illegally delay the election, we’ll see him in court,” he said.

The attorney general went on to state that the type of voter fraud Trump claims “has been used to justify policies that make it more difficult, and in too many cases, outright prevent, individuals from exercising their right to vote.”

“Vote by mail works in states across the country, and it works in Washington. This administration must stop misleading the public about non-existent voter fraud and instead ensure that voting is safe and accessible for everyone,” he said.

Ferguson also referenced a 2017 congressional request, where he and Secretary of State Kim Wyman detailed that there were only a handful of improper votes out of 3.3 million case in the November 2016 election.
