PORTLAND, Ore. — A K9 with the Portland Police Bureau was killed in an officer-involved shooting Thursday that resulted in the suspect’s death.
At approximately 1:45 p.m., two Portland Police Officers and two officers from other agencies encountered a wanted subject near SE 97th Avenue and SE Oak Street in Portland. When the law enforcement officers confronted the suspect, gunshots broke out.
“Despite lifesaving efforts, an adult male was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the Portland Police Bureau stated in a press release. “A firearm was recovered at the scene.”
The man killed in the officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon was the suspect in a homicide that occurred in Gresham earlier Thursday.
K9 Kylo killed in officer-involved shooting
During the shooting, a K9 was injured. The dog, Kylo, was transported to an animal hospital for treatment.
“Unfortunately, K9 Kylo died as a result of injuries sustained in the shooting,” the Portland Police Bureau wrote.
Kylo served with the Portland Police Bureau for six years. Sept. 24 was supposed to be the dog’s last shift. The bureau said it will soon release more information about Kylo, including his accomplishments during his six-year career.
The Portland Police Bureau Homicide Unit responded to the scene to investigate the shooting.
“As part of the use of force review process, the bureau will conduct an internal review of the entire incident, including the initial response, resources requested, tactics used, and post-shooting actions,” the Portland Police Bureau wrote.
