PINPOINT ALERT DAY: Snowy mountain passes, rain showers in lowlands and thunderstorms

SEATTLE — We have had a Pinpoint Alert Weather Day with a Winter Weather Advisory for the first widespread snow event of the season over the Olympic and Cascade Ranges. It expires at 5 pm Wednesday, as steady, heavier snowfall occurred Wednesday morning and now just sporadic snow showers continue Wednesday afternoon.

Our weather concerns will move from the mountain snow into an afternoon of lowland rain showers and potential thunderstorms which may develop midafternoon.

The active weather Wednesday is from a cold upper low pressure that was centered on Vancouver Island. The low will slowly slide south over the Pacific Ocean and hover off the coast of Washington by Friday afternoon through early Sunday morning. A steady spin of showers rotating around the Low will continue rolling across Western Washington cities through the end of the week.

With the new arrival of low and cooler air, the atmosphere is unstable. Plenty of showers today will destabilize with the afternoon sun, and a risk of thunderstorms will develop. Watch out Wednesday afternoon for heavy downpours, small hail, lightning, and gusty wind where these thunderstorms pop up.

Mountain snow was heaviest through the morning hours. This afternoon the snow has become more showery in nature.

High temperatures in Western Washington this week will be in the upper 40s to lower 50s. The overnight lows will be chilly in the 30s to around 40 in the mornings. Morning lows will feel brisk all the way through the weekend. Each day ahead will have some showers and sunbreaks.

There will be drier breaks at times along with widely varied locations of showers, because the low will be wobbling around offshore as it weakens.

The low finally tracks back up into British Columbia Saturday, taking all the wet weather with it. A much drier Sunday afternoon develops, and dry weather with filtered sunshine through high clouds is setting up for Monday and Tuesday.

The beginning of the new week brings warmer, moderating temperatures along with the dry weather.
