Pike Place Market celebrates 115th anniversary

Pike Place Market is celebrating its 115th birthday on Wednesday.

Although it may have started as a small market, Pike Place Market has evolved into the largest continuously operating public farmers market in the U.S. with 500 small businesses and 450 residents in the Market’s affordable housing.

The market first opened on Aug. 17, 1907, when several farmers set up their produce-filled wagons on Pike Place.

Two years later, an average of 64 farmers were setting up at the market each day, with more than 300,000 shoppers visiting each month.

To celebrate, the first 115 shoppers enjoyed free mini donuts from Daily Dozen Donuts and hot beverages from several Market businesses.
