EDMONDS, Wash. — Ferry services in Edmonds were suspended Monday, leaving the terminal empty and turning away unsuspecting travelers.
Signs posted at the Edmonds terminal notified drivers that no ferries would run until further notice.
At the Edmonds terminal around 1:30 p.m. Monday, there were deserted lanes, no people in the waiting area of the terminal, and no vehicle traffic.
While some commuters missed prior alerts and were turned away upon arrival, travelers heading to Mukilteo faced long delays and waited through multiple ferry cycles to secure a crossing.
Among those turned away at Edmonds were cyclists who had traveled from Seattle.
Cyclist Dylan Raaz had planned to cross the water to ride around Bainbridge Island before learning of the shutdown.
“...Then ride around the back side of Bainbridge, in fact. Yeah, that’s a good ride, I guess it’s not an option today,” Raaz said. “I think we’ll just have to go back the way we came. It’s not the end of the world, but I’m not sure, I’m not sure why the ferries are down, but I know it disrupts a lot more people than me and my little bike ride.”
Kelly Goszkowicz is visiting Edmonds and admitted that a ferry ride would have been on her itinerary, but she noticed the service disruption while staying in the area.
Goszkowicz expressed concern over potential broader impacts on local commerce and travel.
“I came to stay in Edmonds for a few days and noticed the ferry wasn’t running,” Goszkowicz said. “I’m sure a lot of businesses have been effected things like that and how are people going to commute back and forth.”
At the Mukilteo terminal, travelers endured long lines, because driving south through Seattle presented a much longer and arduous route, potentially.
Aaron, a ferry rider attempting to reach Clinton, hoped for a quick crossing after seeing an empty line upon arrival.
“Floating around for about two years waiting to get across to Clinton,” Aaron said. “I checked the ferry app before I left the house and kind of expected it when I showed. When I showed up, there was nobody in line, so I thought I could catch the ferry and here we are on the third ferry later and still waiting.”
Ferry workers at the Edmonds location verbally informed some drivers that service might not resume for the day or potentially for the entire week. The official cause of the service suspension has not been released.
