BLYN, Wash. — Clallam County Fire District 3 firefighters responded Sunday night to an uncontained fire covering approximately one acre on a hill above Blyn.
Fire crews say they located a pallet fire that was burning surrounding grass and creeping toward the edge of a slope.
Firefighters put out the fire before it could spread further into dry vegetation.
Fire officials say that fires used to dispose of materials do not qualify as recreational fires, and burning manufactured wood products such as pallets is prohibited. Also, burning on land managed by the Washington Department of Natural Resources requires an appropriate permit.
Clallam County lifted countywide burn restrictions on Oct. 1, 2026, allowing recreational and residential burning outside designated No Burn Areas. However, winter residential burning rules remain in effect from Oct. 1 through April 30.
Under the regulations, residential burn piles may measure up to 10 by 10 by five feet, cannot be started before sunrise, and cannot have material added after sunset.
They say fire regulations strictly prohibit the burning of pallets, construction debris, treated, painted, or stained wood, garbage, and plastics.
Land-clearing debris disposal requires a permit from the Olympic Region Clean Air Agency.
Outdoor burning is also prohibited when wind speeds exceed five miles per hour from any direction, and a responsible person must stay with the fire until it is completely extinguished.
