Paid street parking could be coming to the busiest parts of West Seattle Junction and Upper Queen Anne.

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) said the changes are meant to make parking more predictable while adding better loading zones, accessible parking, bike and scooter spaces, and safer pedestrian crossings.

“We support SDOT’s updated parking plan and believe it will help keep parking spaces turning over and available throughout the day,” Chris Mackay, the executive director of the West Seattle Junction Association, said. “Better turnover ultimately benefits both our businesses and the people who come to the Junction.”

SDOT said the goal is to reduce drivers circling for spots and make it easier to access local businesses. The changes are meant to support local businesses, according to SDOT, while making the most of limited curb space.

“Local businesses aren’t just a thread of each neighborhood’s fabric – they’re often the heart and soul of what makes it a fun and special place to be,” SDOT stated. “West Seattle Junction is home to more than 200 businesses – from record stores and pizzerias to grocery stores and a beloved bowling alley. Meanwhile, Upper Queen Anne residents count on their business district for essential products, social connection, and more.”

The changes are expected to begin in 2027.
