It was 50 years ago Saturday that a number of orcas were captured from the Pacific Northwest and were shipped far from their home.
Tokitae, also known as Lolita the Orca, is the lone whale involved that is still alive and is now at the Miami Seaquarium.
On Saturday, the Orca Network held a virtual event to honor Tokitae.
They have been leading a decades-long effort to free her and return her back to her home waters.
Marine- life experts believe Tokitae was about four when she was captured.
During the online event, there were also several waterside ceremonies held at various locations, including one at Penn Cove, where she was captured.
