Seattle officer shoots, wounds man firing rifle in apartment complex

SEATTLE — A Seattle police officer shot and wounded a man who was firing a rifle in an apartment complex in the Squire Park neighborhood near the Central District Friday.

At 4:34 a.m., police began receiving reports of shots fired near 14th Avenue and East Yesler Way, not far from Bailey Gatzert Elementary School.

Officers arrived and heard gunshots and people screaming.

Police entered the apartment complex and found a man armed with a rifle. One officer fired at the man, striking him. The man then went into an apartment unit and refused to come out.

There was a large police presence and an armored vehicle was seen outside the Sorento apartments during the response.

Officers eventually convinced the man to surrender. He was taken into custody and transported to Harborview Medical Center.

Police searched the apartment building and found no victims but did find several apartments damaged by gunfire.

The Force Investigation Team will investigate the shooting.

Representatives from the Office of Police Accountability and the Office of Inspector General were at the scene.
