October begins but wet and windy fall storms stay away

October weather

WASHINGTON — After a stellar Wednesday, I’ve been describing Thursday’s forecast as just a little bit of a “speed bump.” It’s really a pretty small one!

Through the day, there could be a few passing sprinkles or very light showers mainly along areas nearest the Canadian border, though later in the afternoon and evening a few sprinkles may drift elsewhere.

Still, this is a very minor weather change for most of Western Washington, with many communities staying dry. Highs will remain mild, climbing into the mid-to-upper 60s in Seattle.

Friday into the weekend, expect some patchy morning low clouds and fog, giving way to increasing sunshine each afternoon. Temperatures will respond accordingly, warming into the upper 60s Saturday and around 70 to 71 degrees in Seattle on Sunday.

That’s impressive warmth for early October. In fact, once we get beyond the first few days of the month, 70-degree highs become increasingly difficult to achieve as autumn settles in and daylight rapidly fades. Sunday’s forecast high is running several degrees above average and will provide one more taste of late-summer weather before the season inevitably turns.

The combination of cool, crisp mornings and pleasantly warm afternoons should make for an outstanding fall weekend across Western Washington. This is the time many of us start decorating for fall, but also we have events outside like Salmon Days in Issaquah, and of course, the big Chargers-Seahawks game at Lumen Field on Sunday. The weather will be great for anything you have to do outside!

Dry weather with partly sunny skies and areas of morning fog look to continue into next week.

In fact, after tomorrow’s slight chance for precipitation, it doesn’t appear we’ll get another shot at rainfall until at least late next week.

The more active fall weather pattern remains bottled up well to our north, allowing high pressure to hold firm over the Pacific Northwest.

Autumn rain will eventually return, but for now, the region appears set to enjoy an extended stretch of unusually pleasant October weather.
