SNOQUALMIE PASS, Wash. — On Sunday, studded tires became permissible across Washington through March 31. For commercial vehicles, or “big rigs”, it is the law to carry chains at all times during this time period for cross-state travel.

To make sure commercial drivers are prepared for winter conditions, the Washington State Patrol (WSP) is conducting a chains emphasis patrol over Snoqualmie Pass on Tuesday and Wednesday, even though pass conditions are snow-free at the moment.

WSP patrol reminds commercial drivers to carry chains on Snoqualmie Pass

WSP Trooper Jeremy Weber explained that the emphasis will be conducted to educate and enforce the need for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers to carry the appropriate amount of snow traction devices on Snoqualmie Pass during the winter months.

“Our main goal is to educate and gain compliance with CMV drivers to carry chains from November 1st to April 1,” he added.

The two-day emphasis patrol is not intended to issue tickets.

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has issued a guideline for properly installing chains on vehicles.

Front-wheel-drive vehicle

You must install chains on the front two tires.

Rear-wheel-drive vehicle

You must install chains on the rear two tires.

Four-wheel drive or all-wheel drive vehicle

If chains are required on all vehicles, state law requires chains to be installed on at least one set of two tires (either both front tires or both back tires). However, check your owner’s manual or car dealership for specifics about the number of tires to chain and how to install chains or approved chain alternatives for your particular vehicle.

Commercial vehicles/trailers

Consult commercial vehicle chain requirements.

Noncommercial vehicles and trailers, RVs, etc. under 10,000 pounds

Follow regular chain requirements.

When chains are required, the law only requires them on the pulling vehicle. Drivers can install chains on both the pulling vehicle and the trailer if they wish.

Vehicle, trailer and load combination more than 10,000 pounds

Consult commercial vehicle chain requirements for chain placement for vehicle and trailer combos above 10,000 pounds. Even if you are not a commercial vehicle, these requirements are based on the weight of the vehicle, not the type, and could include larger SUVs, etc.

The fine for not following winter chain and traction tire requirements in Washington is $500.
