New ‘Fast Ferry’ departs from Des Moines beginning Wednesday

DES MOINES, Wash. — Imagine getting from Des Moines to Seattle in 40 minutes. That’s what officials are promising with a new “Fast Ferry.”

This pilot project is to test the viability of a passenger-only fast ferry between the Des Moines Marina and Downtown Seattle’s Bell Harbor Marina.

Service begins Wednesday and will run through Sunday, Oct. 9.

The boat will make four trips a day from Wednesday through Sunday.

Take-off times from the Des Moines Marina are 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Southbound trips from Seattle will depart at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., with the boat staying overnight in Des Moines.

The Chilkat Express is owned and operated by Puget Sound Express and is wheelchair accessible, as are the docks at both terminals.

The City of Des Moines is partnering with the Highline School District to provide deckhands to work alongside trained crew.

The paid internships give students exposure to the maritime industry and students will gain sea time credit.

You can ride the ferry for free until Aug. 15.

After that, the fare will be $10 each way. Seniors and active military personnel will pay $5 each way, and children 13 and under ride free.
