National Guard pre-deployed as Whatcom County prepares for weekend flooding

WHATCOM COUNTY, Wash. — National Guard troops are expected to arrive in Whatcom County on Saturday to assist area agencies in advance of this weekend’s storm systems.

Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue and other fire and response personnel are also being pre-deployed. National Guard troops’ specific missions include sandbagging, transportation of supplies and providing support to Nooksack, Sumas and Everson.

“Since the flooding began, everyone from law enforcement and first responders to mayors, neighbors and local agencies have been answering the call to help,” said Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo. “We welcome the news that members of the National Guard are ready to join in the response.”

The Nooksack River is currently projected to reach moderate flood stage on Sunday. Previous storms caused damage to levee systems, which may result in greater impacts than what would typically be experienced at these river levels.

Although there is much uncertainty as a result of last week’s flooding, Sunday morning’s predicted flows are likely high enough to overtake Main Street in Everson. The potential also exists for this to impact Sumas.
